Light Rail Transit

Government of Uganda is planning to develop a Light Rail Urban Mass Transit System (LRT) to serve the GKMA population of Kampala, Wakiso, Mpigi and Mukono.

Total expected passengers per day for all routes: 720,000 persons
Train sets will be 40 trains for first phase
The LRT will be of electric traction for better operational efficiency, lower operating & maintenance cost, and no emissions (compared to diesel traction)
Operating time will be from 5:00 am to 11:30pm
Ticketing method will be both pre-paid and on-board
The base fare will not exceed UGX 500 for short rides
There will be three travel classes: first, upper and economy class to attract middle and high-income ridership
The train interval will be 5-10 minutes at full operating capacity
Each train will have capacity to carry 350 passengers (65 seated and 285 standing)
The Light Rail Mass Transit system will transport 15,000 passengers per hour per direction
